Daylight: the one decision that cannot be changed later

Daylight: the one decision that cannot be changed later

Almost anything in a house can be changed after it is built. Colour, furniture, even the layout if the walls are not structural. One thing stays as drawn: where the sun falls.

East for bedrooms
Morning light, cool evenings. A west-facing bedroom is hot at the hour you want to sleep, every summer.

South for living spaces
The most light, for the longest time. With a calculated overhang, the low winter sun comes in and the high summer sun is stopped — without blinds and without air conditioning running from May.

North for work
Steady light, no hard shadows, no glare on a screen. This is why painting studios have had north windows for centuries.

West, with care
Afternoon sun comes in low and horizontal, and an overhang will not stop it. A kitchen or a bathroom takes that better than a study.

How we check
We run a sunlight study on the proposed volume, at the solstices and equinoxes. It takes a working day and it often changes the plan — for the better.
